Opportunity For Moriori Youth – trainee berth opportunity

Hokotehi has received an invitation from Ministry of Culture and Heritage (MCH) for 2 young men and 2 young women (aged 16+ or 19+) to take part in a voyage around a part of NZ within a date range between late Sept and 20 December 2019.

A flotilla of six vessels including waka hourua, va’a moana, heritage and youth ships will travel around our coastline to promote the exceptional feats of Pacific, Māori, Moriori and European voyaging that brought us together. MCH will be looking for applicants who have a firm understanding and a genuine interest in the Tuia 250 kaupapa and themes, and applicants who are creative and have relationships with their communities and imi. Participants will also be expected to take part on waka activities and tasks as well as cultural components of voyaging (Karakii, rongo etc).

You will need to be in good physical health and be comfortable at sea and in the water.

We are now calling for expressions of interest (EOI) by July 10 for one of these positions. To do this please email the office (office@kopinga.co.nz) with the following:

1. Name and date of birth

2. Preference for which voyage you wish to join (see table) – provide us with your 3 top choices because some places may be filled already. Note some voyages have age restrictions

3. Short statement of why you think you should be selected to represent Moriori

MCH will meet the costs of the voyage and Hokotehi will meet reasonable costs of travel to the voyaging port from your home and purchase of compulsory equipment.
